Perfect Games, Big Doubles Scores Highlight Tourney’s Closing Weekend

The 86th annual New York State Open Championships, conducted by the Empire State United States Bowling Congress Bowling Association, went out with a bang Sunday afternoon (May 16).

At Tonawanda Bowling Center, the site of the doubles and singles competition, William Erion of Binghamton, Patrick Schloupt of Newfield (near Ithaca) and Robert Rudnick of Lancaster (near Buffalo) posted 300 games – with Schloupt tying for the unofficial handicap singles lead at 818 (725 scratch plus 93 pins handicap).

While at the team event at Rapids Bowling Center in Niagara Falls, Ray Benjamin of Corning rolled 300—745 for his F.M. Howell & Co. team on Sunday, the day after Robert Rudnick rolled a 300—746 for his Best Approach Pro Shop team.

At Tonawanda, Rudnick finished with an 805 series in doubles, and his brother, David, added 749, for the lead in scratch doubles at 1,554.  This came just one squad after John Masiello of Buffalo shot 300---825 and partner Eric Johns of Niagara Falls added 721 for a 1,546 scratch doubles score.

Honorable mention goes to Stephanie Kendall of Endwell who rolled 709 scratch, 769 with handicap, on Sunday.

On Saturday, Jerry Ripley of Weedsport rolled a 300 game en route to a 698 scratch series (788 with handicap) in singles, and Chris Patterson of Grand Island shot 767 scratch in singles to take the unofficial lead in that category.  He finished with a 280 game.

Several teams topped the 3,400 mark over the weekend, but no teams were able to knock off the 3,816 score that was registered by the Turnbull Heating & Air Conditioning team of Genesee County a few weeks ago.  The Turnbull team is the unofficial team champion, with Prime Time Pro Shop of Tonawanda second at 3,806.
