FAQs about Find a Coach,
Coaches Association
and Welcome to Bowling

NOVEMBER 30, 2011 -- The USBC Coaching Certification and Development department has received several questions pertaining to "Find a Coach", Coaches Association and the Welcome to Bowling program. A look at some of the questions:

Q: How much does it cost to join the Coaches Association?
Standard membership is free to all active USBC certified coaches at all levels. Premium membership is $60. Go to BOWL.com/coaching and click on the Coaches Assoc tab.

Q: I'm a USBC certified coach. Why is my name not listed under "Find a Coach"?
Coaches must activate their Coaches Association membership each year (beginning Aug. 1) in order to be included. Legally, we are not permitted to post personal information on the site without a coach's permission.

Q: I was listed under "Find a Coach" last year but I just noticed my information is no longer there. Why was my name removed?
Joining or activating each year gives coaches the opportunity to review and edit their listing. If you are an active Bronze, Silver or Gold coach, you will need to activate your Coaches Association member to be listed under "Find a Coach". Those who were certified prior to Jan. 1, 2006, and have not started, completed, or passed the recertification exams will not be able to add their information to the "Find a Coach" page.

Although Standard membership is available at no charge, coaches choosing the Premium option must renew annually in order to be covered under the $1 million liability insurance policy.

Q: I recently became a certified coach and want to get my Coaches Association membership. Where do I start? And what do I need to do if I previously had a membership?
We have created tutorials for each new and returning members. Please select the one that applies to you:
-- New Coaches Association member, click here.
-- Returning Coaches Association member, click here.

Q: I signed up as a participating coach for the new Welcome to Bowling program. Where is this information located and why is my name not listed under "Find a Coach"?
The Welcome to Bowling program is a separate listing for coaches who want to help new and returning bowlers by providing a 30-minute lesson for $20.

New USBC adult members will receive a postcard with details about the program, including a link to BOWL.com/welcome where the new bowlers can watch helpful video tips and see the list of participating coaches and pro shops.

If you are not currently a part of this new program, please email us at coaching@bowl.com. If you also wish to be listed under Find a Coach, please refer to the instructions above.

Q: I have a User ID and password for the education.bowl.com site. Why doesn't it work when I try to log in and activate my Coaches Association membership?
BOWL.com and education.bowl.com are two separate sites requiring separate login information.

If you are looking for general coaching information, i.e., conference schedules, Continuing Education Units (CEU) opportunities, coaching tips, Coaches Association, etc., go to BOWL.com/coaching.

If you are interested in taking a quiz for CEU credit, purchasing one of the Bronze modules or downloading the CEU Reporting Workbooks, go to education.bowl.com.

We hope this information is helpful. As always, if you have any questions, please email coaching@bowl.com or elearning@bowl.com and a member of the USBC Coaching Certification and Development staff will be happy to assist you.

Contribute your article for Coach Reviewed Articles
Last month we announced plans to include a new online collection of articles focused on increasing the knowledge of coaches and bowlers. These articles will be written by coaches in the field and reviewed and edited by fellow coaches. Because articles will be peer-reviewed, the content and quality of the articles will be set to a higher standard.

Articles will be housed on the coaching pages of BOWL.com under the Continuing Education tab. Coaches will be able to read articles and complete quizzes for continuing education credit. This collection is set to go online the beginning of January 2012.

When an article is submitted to USBC Coaching Certification and Development, it will be sent to three coaches for review. So it can be judged for content, the reviewers will not know the author of the article and the author will not know who will review the article. Reviewers will determine the article's content quality and will vote on whether to publish or seek revisions. For this reason, reviewers will not be given information on the other reviewers of an article.

Thanks to those coaches who have volunteered to be reviewers and contributors. Although we now have plenty of reviewers, we still need more contributors. Please step up and share your knowledge and experience with your fellow coaches. If you are interested in submitting articles or if you have any questions, please contact Nick Bohanan at nick.bohanan@bowl.com.

USBC, BPAA Join Forces
to Focus on Youth Development

ARLINGTON, Texas, Feb.4, 2011 -- The United States Bowling Congress is taking a proactive approach toward ensuring high-caliber youth bowling, instruction and coaching.

At the top of the list of news coming out of the International Bowling Campus is a joint effort by the USBC and the Bowling Proprietors’ Association of America to form a new team focused on youth bowling.  The IBC Youth Development Team will combine staff resources of USBC and BPAA youth programs under one umbrella.

“The formation of this new team demonstrates the unity of the bowling industry when it comes to our youth,” BPAA Executive Director Steve Johnson said. “Focusing campus resources in one effective team sets the stage for better programs and results at all levels.”

The new team will manage all industry youth programs including membership, high school, collegiate, tournaments, Bowlopolis, Bowler’s Ed In-School and the Youth Education Services (YES) Fund pilot program leagues.

The new youth team will be led by Chad Murphy who will have the title IBC Director of Youth Development and report to both Upson and Johnson. Last year, Murphy initiated the creation of the YES Fund. The YES Fund, a joint project of USBC and BPAA, has attracted several hundred-thousand dollars in contributions from bowling’s top industry brands.

-- Speaking of the YES Fund, a new concept for youth leagues for bowlers 12 years old and younger is ready to be rolled out across the United States.  YES officials are seeking bowling center and volunteer support to make this program successful.

The YES Fund’s pilot program leagues involve a format similar to other youth sports. Each team has four players along with a volunteer coach. The teams hold a practice once a week before competing in league play. Teams are paired according to ability and there is no handicap involved in scoring.

Any organizer involved in youth bowling may participate by starting a YES Fund pilot program league. For more information, contact Murphy at Chad@bpaa.com or 817-385-8469.

A video with more details about the YES Fund pilot program leagues can found at BOWL.com or BPAA.com.

Currently, Rab’s Country Lanes in Staten Island is among those centers taking part in the test program.
