Empire State USBC BA Awards Scholarships to Two Student-Athletes

The Empire State United States Bowling Congress Bowling Association (ESUSBCBA) has awarded two $1,000 scholarships for the 2008-09 season.

Nicholas DiLauro of Farmingdale and Korrie Lynne Mack of Deerfield, who graduated with high honors in 2009 from Farmingdale (L.I.) and Whitesboro High School, respectively, were recognized by the state association for their scholastic and bowling achievements.

“We are pleased to be able to honor these deserving young people with these scholarships,” said Mike Pettinella, ESUSBCBA president. “They have excelled in the classroom, in their communities and on the lanes, and have exhibited remarkable leadership qualities along the way.”

DiLauro participated in varsity bowling in grades 10-12 and was captain of the varsity bowling team in his senior year.  He placed second last year in the finals of the state bowling tournament.  He had a 190-plus average and has a 300 game to his credit.

He also was involved in the Key Club, Mathletes, History Club, Marching Band and Pep Band. His community activities included serving as a counselor for the Farmingdale summer recreation program, playing tuba at church holiday concerts, sousaphone in numerous parades, religious education, breast cancer walk and Relay for Life.

Mack won the varsity coaches award, was varsity team captain for three years, took first place in her league’s division and placed third in the MLK Tournament, rolling a 600 series.  She had a 165 average.

She won scholar-athlete awards in softball and soccer, is a black belt in karate and was secretary of the International Club.  Some of her numerous community activities include volunteering at Hope House (for the homeless), Relay for Life, breast cancer walk, Salvation Army bell-ringing, serving meals at the Rescue Mission and assisting with her church’s youth chapel.

Going forward, the ESUSBCBA announced that the scholarship application process will start online at the organization’s website, with the applicant being directed to complete the final stage of the process by printing the School Official/Counselor Evaluation Form and including their transcript.

The deadline for graduating seniors from across the state to complete the application is March 1.

“Scholarships are awarded in cooperation with the state women’s and youth associations,” said Frank Wilkinson, scholarship committee chairperson. “The awards are given based on a point system, with the scholarships going to the two applicants receiving the most points, without regard to gender.”
